{"id":27,"date":"2013-02-08T21:07:58","date_gmt":"2013-02-09T04:07:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lydiakluge.com\/?p=27"},"modified":"2013-10-18T21:08:41","modified_gmt":"2013-10-19T04:08:41","slug":"friday-8th-february-2013","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lydiakluge.com\/?p=27","title":{"rendered":"Scars"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When I woke up this morning I noticed the scars under my left eye &#8211; several small pink slivers running in parallel lines.\u00a0 Sometimes they look more apparent when I first awaken, when my skin is paler from sleep and under the harsh lights of the bathroom mirror.\u00a0 They seem to fade as they day unravels or sometimes I don\u2019t even notice them at all.<\/p>\n<p>These scars are some of my numerous collection, some from mishaps in my childhood \u2013 falling off my bike, scuffles with my siblings, nicking a razor against my knee &#8211; and others earned later in life.\u00a0 Come to think of it the scars in my adulthood are from similar fates \u2013 many of them bike related \u2013 an errant tree branch as I tear long the trail, an unfriendly chain cog grabbing my shin, gravel embedding itself in my elbow as I slide along the path after losing control.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_29\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lydiakluge.com\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/IMG_5607.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-29\" class=\" wp-image-29 \" alt=\"The &quot;scar&quot; of this path on the landscape reminds me of the one on my right arm.\" src=\"https:\/\/lydiakluge.com\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/IMG_5607-1024x682.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lydiakluge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/IMG_5607-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/lydiakluge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/IMG_5607-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/lydiakluge.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/IMG_5607-624x416.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-29\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The &#8220;scar&#8221; of this path on the landscape reminds me of the one on my right arm.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I realize these scars are gained from <i>doing<\/i>.\u00a0 If I wasn\u2019t so adventurous, then I wouldn\u2019t have many of them.\u00a0 There is a tradeoff, an opportunity cost &#8211; by putting oneself in a situation to get hurt, that might just happen \u2013 you get hurt.\u00a0 I think there are likely more injuries and scars in Park City, where I live, than other parts of the world.\u00a0 But that is because people are out there, testing themselves, defying gravity, pushing the limits \u2013 skiing, biking, hiking, sailing \u2013 doing.\u00a0 Would you want to pick the alternative and limit your adventures to stay scar free?<\/p>\n<p>Scars may be physical signs of imperfection, but I think they can be beautiful.\u00a0 They tell a story, they become part of you.\u00a0 I remember reading in the book <i>Little Bee<\/i>, by Chris Cleave \u201c\u2026I ask you right here please to agree with me that a scar is never ugly. That is what the scar makers want us to think. But you and I, we must make an agreement to defy them. We must see all scars as beauty. Okay? This will be our secret. Because take it from me, a scar does not form on the dying.
